VCu helps schools strengthen literacy instruction through practical professional development, targeted student programming, and responsive support that makes existing resources more effective—without adding another disconnected initiative for teachers to manage.
When strong programs still produce mixed results.
Schools invest in evidence-informed curriculum, assessments, intervention programs, and tiered systems of support. Yet even strong programs may not consistently produce the expected results across classrooms and student groups.
The challenge may not be a lack of instruction. Learners may be responding differently because of unstable prerequisite skills, language-processing demands, memory, organization, or difficulty accessing the way a concept is being presented.
VCu works within existing curriculum and MTSS structures to help educators identify precise access targets through a standards-based lens and strengthen instruction with high-yield concepts and activities designed to improve student outcomes.

VCu provides practical, responsive supports based on the priorities, student needs, and existing systems of each school or district.
Who We Support
VCu partners with school and district leaders, general and special education teachers, intervention teams, instructional coaches, and other professionals responsible for improving literacy outcomes.
Strengthen Instructional Practice
Professional development and instructional coaching help educators translate evidence-informed literacy principles into clear, usable classroom practices. Support may address systematic phonics, comprehension, language processing, memory, organization, and explicit learning routines.
Extend the Reach of Existing Curriculum
VCu helps educators examine how learners are responding to existing curriculum and identify where high-yield strategies and activities, instructional routines, or prerequisite development may be needed. The goal is to make existing curriculum more accessible—not to replace effective systems.
However, schools may also choose from VCu supplemental resources when additional practice, representation, or instructional support would strengthen existing materials. Supplemental resources are optional and are not intended to replace the school’s adopted curriculum.
Assess and Monitor Instructional Needs
Curriculum-based and informal literacy assessments, running records, student work samples, and progress-monitoring measures drive instructional clarity, establish starting points, and evaluate how learners are responding to support.
Pilot Responsive Approaches
Targeted literacy pilots and student demonstrations allow schools to explore responsive instructional practices with individual learners, small groups, classrooms or grade level. Options may include pre-K and kindergarten early-literacy pilots, literacy access pilots for older learners, and student demonstrations that help educators observe the practices in action. Student response can help inform broader instructional decisions and identify which learners may require greater individualization.
Strengthen MTSS Implementation and Special Education
VCu can help teams connect instructional assessment, targeted support, progress monitoring, and responsive adjustment. Services may also include individual or small-group literacy instruction for MTSS intervention or RSP service minutes. Instruction aligned to identified student needs and school priorities, refining intervention practices, and helping teams determine appropriate next steps when progress stalls.
*Small-group direct instruction is currently available for groups of up to three learners.

Partnerships can be designed around a focused school priority, a specific grade level or student population, or a broader instructional initiative.

VCu does not ask schools to abandon sound curriculum or established systems. We help educators use what they already have more strategically, recognize when learners need a different point of access, and make informed adjustments based on student response.
The standards remain meaningful. The instructional route becomes more responsive.
